EUGENE, Ore., July 12 - At an executive session of the Florence City Council on Monday evening, Florence Mayor Phil Brubaker announced a donation of $250,000 from the Arlie-Musumeci Family Foundation to save the Dunes.
The Arlie-Musumeci Family Foundation has pledged to donate up to $250,000 to the City of Florence to be used to purchase the property from Lane County, under the conditions that the property remain as an open space amenity for the public and not be developed. The 80-acre parcel in Glenada has been the source of great debate over the past weeks. The property includes the Dunes, as well as a lake and some wetland and wooded areas west of U.S. Highway 101 and on the southern banks of the Siuslaw River, and the County had proposed selling the property and contributing the funds to the County Parks Department. Many local residents vehemently protested this plan.
"We used to live in Florence so it is a place close to our hearts. Suzanne (Arlie) and I realized we could do something to help retain the beauty of Oregon's coastline and keep the land accessible to the public," said John Musumeci, Vice President of Arlie & Company, "It was a no-brainer."
Suzanne Arlie and John Musumeci a history of substantial open space donations, including land and old growth redwood to the Mid-Peninsula Open Space Trust and a donation of land at Willow Creek in Eugene to the Nature Conservancy.
