On July 10th the U.S. Green Building Council awarded Arlie & Company’s corporate headquarters in The Inkwell its highest LEED rating—Platinum—placing us at the forefront of LEED certified projects in our area. This accomplishment came about thanks to the resolve and talents of our great team and partners. Read on to learn about the Platinum certification and these other recent happenings from Arlie & Company and Crescent Village.

Now that Arlie & Company is in the heart of Crescent Village, I get to experience the pulse of this community every day, and I love it! It’s no surprise to me that our Town Center was chosen by Chambers Communications for the shooting of two scenes in the new Brittany Murphy film.

It was great to celebrate with area businesses during Crescent Village’s lively block party last month. The Eugene Chamber Business After Hours event was a huge success, thanks to the dedication of our fantastic staff and businesses. Don’t forget to check out pictures from that event on our website.

Crescent Village businesses continue to thrive. Raymond James has set up shop in the neighborhood and b2 Wine Bar’s has expanded its in-store wine sales. We are also happy to announce that Inkwell Medical Group will be joining us in The Inkwell this fall. The progressive medical team is seeking LEED Silver Certification with the help of our own Mark Miksis—now a LEED accredited professional—who will administer green building services and act as overall project manager.

In Community Giving we spotlight the success of the Center for Community Counseling’s June 3rd benefit performance of “Humble Boy.” We also offer a review of HIV Alliance’s May 9th RiverWalk. Thank you to all who joined in supporting these two worthy causes.

As always, we welcome your comments and suggestions. Just give us a call at 541.344.5500 or write mail@arlie.com.

Best wishes,

Arlie & Company Corporate Headquarters Earns LEED Platinum Rating, Raising the Regional Bar for Green Building

Arlie & Company’s unwavering commitment to environmentally responsible, healthy buildings has earned the firm the highest rating from U.S. Green Building Council’s prestigious Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rating system. On July 10 USGBC awarded Arlie & Company’s corporate headquarters atop Crescent Village’s The Inkwell with LEED Platinum Certification for Commercial Interior—a ranking unmatched by any building project in the state outside of Portland.

“We are deeply honored to receive this distinction,” says Arlie & Company President Suzanne Arlie. “Thanks to the commitment of our outstanding team and many talented and forward-thinking local partners we’ve succeeded in making this far-reaching vision a reality.”

Arlie and Company Office

Arlie & Company partnered with Rowell Brokaw Architects and Chambers Construction among other local firms to build out the 9,300-square-foot space within The Inkwell—a 37,000-square-foot building on track to becoming Lane County’s first LEED certified multi-tenant professional office building.

“This is a real achievement for Arlie & Company, and we are proud to have partnered with them to be the first local architectural firm to design a LEED Platinum project,” says Austin Bailey, Rowell Brokaw Designer and LEED project administrator for Arlie & Company’s corporate headquarters. “Other building projects in our area have achieved LEED certification, but none have been designed by local architects. This project shows how high we can go with local resources. Arlie & Company could have hired a big firm from Portland, but their choice demonstrates their commitment to supporting our local economy.”

Arlie & Company Development Director and LEED accredited professional Mark Miksis notes that The Inkwell building and Arlie & Company’s space within it epitomize the philosophy of the firm’s founders, John Musumeci and Suzanne Arlie. “Because Arlie & Company value their employees, they wanted to create a healthy, aesthetic work environment. They’re not just talking about corporate values. They’re living them.”

The breathtaking, light-drenched spaces that comprise Arlie & Company’s new corporate home attest to the value of pursuing LEED’s highest standards for building environmentally responsible, economically profitable and healthy workplaces. The connection to environment—a LEED hallmark—is reflected at every turn, with 100 percent of regularly occupied spaces opening to views that include panoramas of the Coburg Hills and surrounding city.

“But much of LEED is a hidden beauty,” notes Mark. “It’s not a tangible.” The ground-coupled heating and cooling system, an interior literally flushed free of volatile organic compounds, Forest Stewardship Counsel-certified building materials, and DALI digital lighting control—the first of its kind in Eugene—culminate to create an environment both earth-friendly and resonant with the human spirit.

“This wasn’t only about sustainability,” stresses Suzanne. “Part of the whole vision was that the space be designed for the human scale, that it offer warmth and beauty as well as energy efficiency.” This humane approach to integrating the myriad LEED requirements to the greatest degree has coalesced into a masterpiece of sustainable office building, making Arlie & Company’s corporate headquarters one of the most desirable workplaces in the region.

Medical Team Chooses the Inkwell

“Arlie and Company has created a very special space. They have accomplished on an urban development level what we hope to accomplish on a human wellness level: We aspire to promote health and wellness in a practical and sustainable way,” says Dr. Martin Hurtado, a family practitioner who is leaving a large medical group in Springfield to open the patient- and earth-friendly Inkwell Medical Group LLC with Nurse Practitioner Eva Schmidt this fall.

“More and more doctors are becoming dissatisfied with paper-pushing, with the volume-based approach to patient care,” Dr. Hurtado says. “Eva and I are giving considerable thought to health and wellness issues, the importance of taking time with patients.” The two are choosing as medical professionals to “step back and slow down,” offering chronic illness education for such diseases as obesity and diabetes—all within a toxin-free space that welcomes daylight and frames nature, conserves water and energy, and utilizes rapidly renewable materials. “On this planet, we put out fires, but we don’t deal with fundamental issues. We can’t deliver healthcare without caring for the wellness of the planet.”

The Inkwell

The Inkwell

This holistic philosophy is reflected in the medical team’s decision to locate at Crescent Village and pursue the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver Certification for the 2,000-square-foot office space on The Inkwell’s second floor—with the help of Arlie & Company Director of Development Mark Miksis, who is now a LEED accredited professional.

Pursuing LEED Silver Certification is not difficult, says Dr. Hurtado, because of Arlie & Company’s commitment to building The Inkwell to the highest LEED standards at the outset. “This is the first LEED project for which we’ve administered green building services,” says Mark, who is acting as overall project manager, coordinating the LEED program with architect Neil Warne and a team from Arlie & Company.

“My focus throughout my career has been around green building,” Mark says. “It’s exciting to be working for a company that values that. Arlie & Company has a big commitment to green building. This separates us from developers and landlords that don’t, and keeps us ahead of the curve.”

Dr. Hurtado’s and Eva’s second-floor office, slated to open in October, will comprise four exam rooms, one procedure room equipped for performing minor surgeries, and a “flex-space” in the lobby area that will feature an expandable wall that can open to a conference room seating about 20 for group visits and educational forums.

“We’re really excited about the clinic layout,” says Dr. Hurtado, especially the conference room. “I worked with Volunteers in Medicine, and I learned through that experience that a great way to help patients is to have them come together and learn from each other, as well as the educator.”

Like Dr. Hurtado, Eva says her first visit to Crescent Village and The Inkwell closed the search for a venue that complemented their pioneering vision in medicine. “After one look at Crescent Village, the standard was set for us, and nothing else even came close,” she says. “The entire foundation of my profession, as a nurse practitioner, is based on health promotion and disease prevention. It's where I thrive. I believe that our environment has enormous influence on our health. I've been fortunate enough to partner with a brilliant physician who shares that vision. And we have both been fortunate to find Crescent Village as the place to help up us provide for our patients a relaxing, therapeutic, non-toxic environment where they can feel welcomed and respected.”

Raymond James Financial Services Finds Great Business Value in Crescent VIllage

The ambience of Crescent Village, the great prospects for the community’s future, and the quality of convenience and atmosphere for clients are among top reasons why Raymond James Financial Advisor and Registered Investment Agent Al King chose to set up office in the Village.

“I wanted more than an office,” stresses Al, who moved to Crescent Village in March. “I wanted an office my clients would feel good about visiting. Crescent Village is a great experience, and all my clients just love visiting the area, and they enjoy the parking convenience. It has great shops and restaurants, and the architecture, landscaping and scenery give people a positive feeling about being here.

“Raymond James is a well known and respected national financial firm, and I think it is great for a retail area to feature some national brand name companies along with the local small businesses,” Al notes. While the financial industry business hours differ from traditional retail business hours, Al says his office draws clientele not just to Raymond James’ doorstep, but also to the entire Village core. “They like being here. A number of them have told me they come back on their own to visit the shops and restaurants.

“I think people believe Crescent Village is a great place to do business and enjoy the Oregon lifestyle,” says Al. “I wanted an office that was more than just a place where my clients could come for business. I wanted to have convenience of access and parking, as well as a venue that presents itself as a first class environment for clients.  I enjoy working here, and feel being located here is a great business value for me.

Find the Perfect Bottle to Take Home at B2 Wine Bar

Crescent Village’s premium wine bar not only serves an impressive array of carefully selected wines, local handcrafted crafted beers and signature lunch and dinner fare—b2 also boasts a fantastic selection of wines by the bottle to enjoy at home or give as gifts.

It was in the business plan from the beginning to work as a bottle shop as well as a wine bar, says b2 Manager Andrew Deffenbacher. “We wanted to be a destination for customers seeking exclusive products, and also provide more exposure for the b2 label.”

B2 Wine Bar

b2 Wine Bar

With its convenient location in the heart of Town Center, residents of Crescent Village and surrounding neighborhoods have the opportunity to walk down and purchase a bottle of wine that b2 staff can pair with their dinner at home, says Andrew. “We also provide discounted prices for mixed case and multiple bottle purchases.”

The wine bar offers a large quantity of those products available through b2’s online store at www.b2winebar.com. “We are able to provide some great deals,” Andrew says. “And people from outside the greater Eugene area are able to purchase wine and have it delivered through the postal service.”

b2 products can also be found in most major grocery outlets including Albertsons, Safeway, Market of Choice, Bi-Mart and Fred Meyer, as well as many local restaurants. Beyond the Northwest, the b2 label is well represented in the Midwest and East Coast, Andrew says.

“We are very happy with our business plan and have stood by it since we opened last November,” says Andrew. “Our business is looking very positive and, just as it is for our neighbor businesses, it will only improve with the surrounding growth.”

With its upscale modern atmosphere and hometown roots, b2 Wine Bar is the perfect place to meet with friends, catch some live music, watch the game, or bring a group for a private event. Hours are: Monday through Friday from noon to 10 p.m., weekends from noon to midnight, with a Sunday Omelet Bar offered from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. For more information please visit www.b2winebar.com or call 541.505.8909.

Concert in the Village Benefits Abused and Neglected Children

CASA logo

Thanks to all of you who turned out to support the Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) Concert in the Village on July 25 in Town Center. The event kicked off the nonprofit organization’s Change Adds Up fundraising campaign. Hundreds of people turned out to enjoy live music from Liesel’s Little Band, Josh Rosen, The Irish Sultan Group and others.

“Concert in the Village was an affordable opportunity to enjoy our beautiful Oregon summer, listen to great music, and for families to spend quality time together,” says Court Appointed Special Advocates Associate Director Sarah-Kate Sharkey. She also noted that "Crescent Village was the perfect venue for the outdoor summer concert and neighborhood party. The atmosphere was welcoming, spacious, and provided many different options for guests to choose from. Support from community neighbors like you is what enables us to continue providing a powerful voice in court for abused and neglected children.”

"When children have a Court Appointed Special Advocate speaking up for their best interests, they are much less likely to experience re-abuse, will have fewer foster care placements, and will receive more therapy, healthcare and education than children who don’t have an advocate. Unfortunately, the numbers of new children in Lane County who are entering foster care because of abuse or neglect is rising at an alarming rate," says Sarah-Kate.

“In 2008, there were approximately 47 new cases of abuse or neglect each month. Yet 2009 has seen an average of 64 new cases each month—a 36 percent increase. In the current economic situation the work of Court Appointed Special Advocates is clearly even more critical, as stress increases for many parents. At the same time, we are experiencing the same difficult economic challenges that our whole community currently faces, further limiting our ability to meet the need.”

“Arlie & Company has been a generous supporter of our work for several years, and we are pleased and honored to partner with the company for this fun summer event,” says Sarah-Kate. “Arlie & Company’s support has made it possible for us to change lives for a greater number of abused and neglected children from our waiting list.” To learn more about Court Appointed Special Advocates please visit www.casa-lane.org or call 541.984.3132.

Humble Boy Helps Center for Community Counseling

Those who attended Very Little Theater’s production of “Humble Boy” on June 3 were not only taking in a great performance of a poignant and powerful play. They were also supporting the Center for Community Counseling in its mission to transform lives and heal relationships.

Approximately 200 people attended the benefit performance, which resulted in the Center raising more than $3,500, according to Center for Community Counseling Co-Director Margo Schaefer. The play, written by Charlotte Jones, spoke beautifully to the Center’s mission, she says.

“Felix Humble is home for his father’s funeral and is struggling with loss and grief. Over the days, he gains new perspective on family issues, some old, some emerging. Felix eventually comes—at times painfully and at times very humorously—to some peace about his father’s passing and his own path. He is only able to be marginally functional until he can see some new truths and come to grips with them,” notes Margo. “Clients at the Center work with a skilled and caring counselor who helps them remove the barriers to their life goals as well.”

The Center is facing an unprecedented need for services at a time when resource levels are very challenging to maintain, much less increase, says Margo. “We receive no government funding, and all our services are provided through the generosity of our community. We are reaching out to as many new caring people as we can to help support our neighbors who cannot afford psychological counseling services anywhere else.”

The Center offers counseling services for adults, as well as classes on parenting and anger management for parents, on a sliding-scale fee based on household income. Costs may be as low as $5 per session or $3 per class. The Center serves 200 community members annually who are low-income and uninsured, about half of whom live on monthly household incomes of $500 or less.

“In addition to the clients we have served for more than 30 years, a whole new group of individuals has emerged in need of services—the newly unemployed,” says Margo. “They have always had resources and most have had insurance, so this is a new reality for which their life skills have not prepared them.”

“Arlie & Company has been an extraordinary community partner, and the Center is deeply grateful for their support,” says Margo. “Through their event sponsorships, Arlie & Company dramatically increases event proceeds and, in turn, the amount of people who can receive services. Not only was Crescent Village the title sponsor for the Humble Boy Benefit at VLT, they made the connection with Cornerstone Café in Crescent Village who contributed the divinely delicious and beautiful desserts served at intermission. The magnitude of Arlie and Company’s contribution really can’t be overstated, and we offer Suzanne and John our warmest thanks.”

Business After Hours

Business After Hours
a Village Blockbuster

With a turnout of more than 900 people, the June 18 Eugene Area Chamber of Commerce Business After Hours event in Crescent Village was a rousing success. Friends and colleagues gathered as early as 4:30 p.m. to tour The Inkwell and townhouses, sample food and wine from Izumi Sushi & Grill, Cornerstone Café, B2 Wine Bar, Lago Blu Gelato and Mezza Luna Pizzeria, receive samples and consultations from bello day spa & salon, and take in a fashion show hosted by Joy’s Boutique. The rich, soulful music of The Essentials filled the Town Center through the evening’s festivities, which lasted until nearly 8 p.m.

“We closed the Village’s main street, so it felt like a big block party,” says Arlie & Company Marketing Director Sadie Dressekie. “When Town Center was designed the architects envisioned the roads being closed to traffic and our hosting street parties just like this one,” she says. “With record-setting attendance and beautiful weather, I believe that many of our guests experienced the Village just as the architects intended. I hope they’ll return for the many events we have planned this summer.”

CV Filming

Crescent Village Catches Action
in Brittany Murphy Thriller

Crescent Village took on a new dimension May 22 when film crews set up cameras to capture actress Brittany Murphy and cast in two scenes of Merchant Film’s modern day action thriller, “Something Wicked.” Crowds of onlookers gathered to watch the drama in and around b2 Wine Bar, while some locals, including Scott Chambers—co-founder with Dan Giustina of Merchant Films—and members of his family acted in the scenes as extras.

Chambers Communications chose Eugene’s Crescent Village and b2 Wine bar for its unique urban style and closeness to their studios, says Scott, Executive Producer for the film. “We could not be happier with the support of the Crescent Village owners and businesses. Filming is always more involved than most people think, and the location had both access for trucks and a high end look we were seeking.”

Set in a mid-size Pacific Northwest community, the film is targeted at 20-somethings, telling the tale of Christine and her boyfriend James, who have just graduated from Highland High School and are looking forward to enjoying their future together. Everything appears to be going well until Christine and James realize that she is being stalked by a psychologically tormented and obsessed young man, who in the end will stop at nothing to be with her. The film is a psychological thriller in the style of Alfred Hitchcock’s harrowing Vertigo.

“We were thrilled when Merchant Film contacted us about filming the movie at Crescent Village, but at the same time, not surprised,” says Arlie & Company Marketing Director Sadie Dressekie. “The careful design of the streets and the buildings in Crescent Village create a really dramatic backdrop.  We are excited to see the Village on screen!”

HIV Alliance Riverwalk
Builds Solidarity

The most rewarding aspect of HIV Alliance’s May 9 RiverWalk, according to HIV Alliance Development Coordinator Melissa Adelman, was the people. “Hearing from others how much it means to them reminds me why I work so hard to make it happen. Giving others the opportunity to reflect, join together, and gain awareness is what makes this an event that should never go away.”

About 150 people participated in the RiverWalk this year, and about $2,000 was raised—“which was a pleasant surprise considering that donations weren’t the main focus of the event,” notes Melissa. Its primary purpose is to raise awareness of the issues surrounding HIV/AIDS. “People who participated were deeply moved by the ability to stand up in public against HIV/AIDS,” she says.

Plain and simple, stresses Melissa, without volunteers, events like these just don’t come together. “When I think about the enthusiasm and dedication they had for the event, it is beyond anything I could have imagined. Arlie & Company employees were fabulous. They provided water to our walkers, and spoke to the importance of community partnerships such as this one. Without the financial support and emotional connection of Arlie & Company employees, we would not be able to provide opportunities like this to the general community.”
